Dog Gone It!

Poor Dakota has been dealing with some eye issues lately. Apparently St Bernards are notorious for having eye problems and ours is no exception. For those of you who don’t know when we first got Dakota she had what was called a “cherry eye” which is where a small gland in the corner of her eye (that is normally tucked under the eye lid) kept swelling. So, we had 3 surgeries to try to fix it before we finally gave up. She needed so many because she kept scratching it with her paw and would rip the stitches out! Well, it’s been 3 years and so far, no major problems until now.

Unbenounced (is this really a word? I can’t find it in the dictionary) to us, Dakota has a food allergy and has to be put on Lamb and Rice cereal (not a huge deal but its almost 2 times as expensive as her food now – she eats 20lbs in a week!). This food allergy causes her ears to itch and get irritated. The irritation causes her to scratch, which in turn resulted in her accidentally scratching her cornea! Aghhh…

One vet visit and $220 later, we thought she’d be on the mend. However there was a slight chance that the pain medication, eye drops and ear lotion would not help and she’d need surgery to fix her eye. Today was our follow up vet visit and sure enough, the eye is not healing on its own and Dakota is in surgery as I’m typing.

Sorry if this is a negative, whinny, gloomy post. I promise. I’ll post something more positive soon. I just had to get this off my chest…it’s been a bummer kind of day. But I do have to say thanks to my friend Laura for lunch at Lenny’s it always puts me in a better mood.

Because I can’t end this post on a sour note (although I’m sure Dakota will come thru surgery with flying colors) here is a little saying that my SIL just sent me that made me chuckle probably because it applies to me.

“I have CDO. It's like OCD but with the letters in alphabetical order, like they are supposed to be.”

HA! LOVE IT!

Poor puppy :( How is she today? We haven't had any major scares with Ebony yet - just a lot of anti-anxiety medicine and cheese :)
Her hips are proving to be slightly problematic at times (such as getting in/out of car) but are just fine when running after cat, chasing mom/dad around the house or jumping up on the bed for crackers....
