Extended Weekend at the Zoo

Boy oh boy were we busy this Memorial weekend.  I believe this is my third post about this one weekend.  Holy moly have we done some fun things.  Not only did we see the fireworks and go to the lake, but it was also our first zoo trip of the year!  It's not often that we get 3-day weekends so we make the most of them.

Russ' mom was nice to lend us her Aspen so Rick, Amanda, Ev and our crew could all fit in one vehicle.  It was a perfect day weather wise and the kids all did great riding to the Detroit Zoo.  By the way, if you have not been, I highly recommend visiting this zoo.  We're pretty fortunate to have a handful of great zoo's within an hour or two driving distance, but I have to say that this one is my favorite!  Great animals (kangaroos, polar bears, peacocks, giraffes and many more) and the grounds are immaculate, well groomed and clean.  Check it out!

Here the kids are waiting for the train to take us to the back of the zoo.  Since the zoo is so big, we've found that its best to ride the train first then just work our way to the front of the zoo.  It usually takes a good 2 to 3 hours to get through (and we don't even see half of the exhibits!) and the kids are beat.  This day was especially hot, but the kids (and adults) did great.

On the train, Benn's acting like a gorilla. :)

Evie loves the train ride too!

I think this is my favorite picture of the kids all day.  Evie was so intrigued by the elephant that she didn't want to look at the camera, Avah's being her usual motherly self and Benn is just being a ham.  Too cute!

Up close view of the giraffes.  I was pleasantly surprised that all of the animals were so active since it was so hot.  Its so great to see these giant animals.  They're such amazing creatures.

The kids checking out the grizzly bear on the left.  Scary!

Two younger bears wrestling in the water.  Literally rolling around, pawing, snapping and splashing in the water.  Awesome!

These peacocks were on the prowl and roaming free.  Could've reached out and touched this one (if I weren't so scared).

Checking out the polar bears...wait until you see the POLAR BEARS!!!

I took this picture from inside the tunnel we were in looking up.  This polar bear was swimming directly above us! It was incredible.

This picture isn't that great, but notice the polar bear's paw.  He (or she, I wasn't sure) was standing on the tunnel we were inside of.  It's paws were ginormous.  Make our St. Bernard (Dakota's) paws look dwarf like!

Here's Benn enjoying watching the seals swim.  For what ever reason, he wasn't that impressed with the polar bear.  He preferred the seals.  :)

All in all it was a great day.  So glad we were able to go with family and enjoy the extended weekend at the zoo!
