Remember when you were younger and the thought of a car ride was SO boring? I can remember my brother and I making up games and playing "I spy" to entertain ourselves.
Today, with modern conveniences like dvd players in cars, iPods and iPhones with games on them (and the fact that our kids are still a bit young to remained focused on playing a game in the car), it hadn't crossed my mind that they'd be interested until this morning.
On our way in town today I decided to take an alternate route. No particular reason really, it wasn't any longer distance or time wise I just needed some different scenery. So, instead of driving on back country roads where the speed limit is 55mph and getting frustrated about being stuck behind a bus or another vehicle traveling 10 or more miles below the limit, I opted for Spring Arbor Rd. The drive was nice and the kids were quiet. Agh...I breathed a sigh of relief and was thinking that maybe a different view was just what we all needed this morning.
By the time we got into Spring Arbor things got a bit noisier in the car. At first I couldn't really tell what my 2 and 4 year old were yelling at. Loud, short bursts of words that were unidentifiable until I looked back to see what all the comotion was and realized they were pointing out their windows at something. Turns out they were yelling "FLAG!" over and over again. Turns out every flag/flag pole we passed the kids were pointing it out and yelling, "FLAG!" as if to see who could spot each flag first.
I know what you're thinking...how could I not know what they were yelling at? Well, Benn was by far the loudest yeller and coming from a two year old, sometimes it takes a translator to figure out what they're saying. His interpretation of the word flag is said with a silent "l". It didn't take long for me to figure out he was really meaning to say F-L-A-G, but for a split second there I was a little alarmed!
Once we were all clear on the "rules" of the game, I joined in and the remaining 5 minuted of our commute was spent playing the Flag Game. Walah the invention of the first Gaston Family car game.
