Poor baby Benn has been having belly issues...either digestion, constipation or bowel (we're not sure). We've been trying different things to help the poor guy feel better for the past 2 weeks, but nothing seemed to help. So, I insisted he be seen by his pediatrician who checked him out then ordered xrays at Allegiance. We had them done on Monday and sure enough, the doc called back Monday night and said he had a partial blockage in his intestine and it could possibly be Hirschbrungs disease. As soon as I heard the words disease, I broke down. What is it? How did he get it? Can it be treated? Does he have to have surgery?
So many questions, and not many answers. But we were told we HAD to go to Mott's Children's Hospital first thing Tuesday morning and that the Pediatric Surgery Clinic would squeeze us in since we didn't have an appointment. If this news wasn't bad enough, before the pediatrician let me go, she said there might be a problem with our health insurance. Apparently when I updated our health care information online for the addition of our son, the information was never sent...therefore Benn was never added to our coverage! What the HECK people! On Monday Benn was 28 days old. In order for him to be covered, the insurance had to be updated within 30 days of his birth.
Needless to say, when I got off the phone with the pediatrician, I was balling my eyes out. Monday was not a good day. Thankfully we have amazing family and friends to help us through this.
Tuesday we packed little Benn up and made our first trip to Mott's Children's Hospital. There Benn had to endure many agonizing tests like more xrays with dye, an enema, and a biopsy. Doctor's still haven't ruled out Hirschbrungs Disease but are hopeful the biopsy will give some answers. I have to say though, our experience with the doctors, nurses, and staff at the hospital were incredible! Hands down they were the best, most caring people we've met in the healthcare industry. We really feel like we're in good hands.
The hardest part of this whole thing is the unknown and the fact that this precious boy is completely dependent on me to take care of him and keep him safe, but I feel so helpless.
